Open Call:

Conceal/Reveal

Matthew Finn, from the series Mother, 1987-present.

We are delighted to announce the results of the Photo Oxford Open Call 2017.

Having received 1,005 entries from 357 photographers across the globe, the jury have agreed on their Top 20, which will be exhibited at OVADA as part of Photo Oxford. They are:

Jocelyn Allen, Zsofi Böhm, Jessica Hoad, Matthew Finn, Karina Jacenko, Aleksei Kazantsev, Corinna Kern, Erik Klein Wolterink, Walter Lewis, John MacLean, Derek Man, Antonio Maria Storch, Francesco Merlini, Ian Murray, Paulina Otylie Surys, Tom Pope, Erin Solomons, Alison Stolwood, Dafna Talmor and Feiyi Wen.

Hearty congratulations to Matthew Finn, who has been named as the Expert Winner with a striking photograph from his critically-acclaimed Mother series. The jury said: “This is a tremendously well-observed scene from a brilliant photographer living through a moment with his mother, with whom he collaborated for nearly 30 years via a series of portraits that depict her everyday rituals set within her home in Leeds. This work has emotional power, depth, biography, history, transformation as experienced in the ordinary moments.”

A special commendation has also been given to Jocelyn Allen’s 21st April, 2017 (Today’s Look). The jury said: "Until we read the description, the inclusion of a hot water bottle in the portrait seems ridiculous and slightly comedic. However, as it transpires that we are looking at a self-portrait, the photograph becomes a striking image of anxiety and vulnerability in relation to self image. In shifting the reading of an apparently prosaic image into something deeply personal and multi-layered, the photographer shows an extremely well-developed sense of the possibilities of photography.”

Sandra Ventura has been named as the Crowd Winner, and the full list of artists voted for in this category are as follows: Pino Agnello, David Barrett, Carla Borel, Angela Bowler, Darrell Godliman, Tom Inspires, Corinna Kern, Pawel Majewski , Vicky Martin, Alex Maxim, Scott McConalogue, Steve Oldfield, Elena Paraskeva, Susan Spence, Marina Spironetti, Marco Tagliarino, Sandra Ventura, Erik Klein Wolterink, Linda Wride.

About the project:

Photo Oxford 2017 Open Call investigates photography’s capacity to both conceal and reveal. The photographic medium is the perfect vehicle for an enquiry of this kind given its unique link to notions of perception and reality, truth and knowledge as well as photographers’ frequent use of the camera to lay bare what would otherwise remain unnoticed. Forty photographs have been selected for a group exhibition hung in a salon style, with twenty selected by the panel of expert judges and twenty chosen by our partner, Photocrowd’s community.

Panel of judges:

Emma Bowkett - Director of Photography at the Financial Times, FT Weekend Magazine

Alan Capal – Head of Content at Alamy

Tim Clark - Editor in Chief at 1000 Words and Guest Curator of Photo Oxford 2017

Greg Hobson - Former Curator of Photographs at the National Media Museum and Guest Curator of Photo Oxford 2017

Alona Pardo - Curator at Barbican Art Gallery, London

Martin Parr - Internationally acclaimed photographer and President of Magnum
